Cerezen Jaw Pain Relief Device

Share this with Friends and Colleagues!

I recently took a two-day course on occlusion. Most of the second day was dedicated to just TMJ disfunction and appliance therapy options! Flat plane splints, cuspid rise, anterior deprogrammers, soft splints… the list goes on and on. It’s enough to make your head spin. The one thing that all of these have in common is that most people do not want to wear them during the day, when just as much clenching and grinding is happening, if not more. Enter… Cerezen.

Here at the Dental Advisor we recently were contacted by the makers of Cerezen (Renew Health Ltd.). Cerezen is a facial and jaw pain device that you wear in your ears! Yes, you heard me right (pun intended), these custom made devices fit discretely into the ears and can be worn day and night.

When I first saw this device I thought it was somehow slightly separating the teeth by holding the jaw open from behind the condyle, but I could not have been more wrong. It actually utilizes biofeedback. Biofeedback has been effectively used for years in the pain management world. According to the manufacturer, When wearing the customized Cerezen device, the ear canal shape changes to that presented in an open jaw position. This then provides a subtle feedback to break the cycle of clenching and grinding and encourages your patient to relax their jaw.

What were the Initial Insights of the Dental Advisor team?
– Great concept!
– The fact that it can be worn day and night is a big plus. Studies have shown that daytime clenching and grinding can occur more and at greater masticatory strength than nighttime grinding.
– I know while I am trying to create that perfect class II contact I am clenching because my jaw hurts after the procedure, I think I need to try one!
– You have to wonder how comfortable these really are to wear all day.

    1. Hi Jillian!
Interesting…. we were just in contact with them recently. I sent my contact with their company a message and we will see what we can find out; however, from the message on their website it looks like they have been taken off the market for right now.
      Thanks for the question!
